DIY Books Made into Beads. What happens to books no one wants?
muffystopheles reblogged your photo: DIY Book Pages Made into Beads. Lots of tutorials…
I’m torn. I LOVE love love the way this looks but at the same time I’m cringing and going “That poor book! D:”
I understand all those people who have these feelings - I do too and commented on design sponge about someone spray painting gorgeous covers black for hideous bookends. But I can tell you that every year my mom is partly in charge of the Annual League of Women Voters’ Book Sale (and it is a HUGE event with buyers coming from several states to look over 20,000 to 30,000 books). Day 1 - booksellers get in for a few hours (because this is a fundraiser and they will pay top price). Day 2 - lots of buyers. Day 3 - first books by the bag for just a few bucks, second the charity folks come by and get to pick out what they want for free, and third (and I just called my mom to check the facts) the last person there is another book buyer who scoops them all up (part of the agreement), pays for them in bulk and either sells them online or sends them to the dump to be recycled.
So after this long story I think my point is that books generally get lots of chances to be in someone’s library and read, or they really aren’t wanted and I’d rather see them made into crafts than in the recycle bin at the dump (where we also have a last chance hut for books!).
Indeed makes me feel better for all the books I’ve dismantled over the years.
